WildestDreams FS4000US Scan Application

Introduction

On this page you can download a driver for the Canon FS4000US. The driver is based on the work from Dave Burns.

The software consists of:
  • WDS-S (scan application): A batch scan application which uses few CPU/memory resources and therefore ideal for background scanning.
  • WDS-IP (image processing appication): An interactive application to get the most out of the scan, which performs tasks like dust removal.

Current version of the software is V0.2. This version is a major improvement over release v0.1 because of improved Scratch and Dust detection and inpainting techniques. The software is also more user friendly because of the possiblity to processing scans in batch-mode. Scanning negative film is now also supported.

This software can be used for free for non-commercial use. For commercial use, this software must be bought. Contact me for details: fs400us@wildestdreams.nl

    Features

  • Scan at 500, 1000, 2000 or 4000 DPI
  • Scan slides and negatives using the filmstrip-holder
  • Dust removal and scratch removal
  • Consistent colors due to a lack of "intelligent" image correction algorithms that always seem to give a different a color bias.
  • Batch Scanning
  • Batch Processing
  • Solves misalignment of RGB channels in scans
  • Solves misalignment of IR channel in scans
  • Full control over scan settings
  • Supports output to tiff, jpg, bmp, gif and others.
  • 42 bit support only (note: calculation performed in 42 bits, display in 8 bit for performance reasons).
  • Scan profiles

Features currently being developed (so not available in the download)
  • Improved scratch removal
  • Scan from the Slide Holder
  • Interactive application performance, especially for 4000 DPI scans

    Features that might be developed
  • Panoramic scans
  • Support for calibration slides

    Features that need attention

  • Sometimes you need to press "Scan" twice in WDS-S before the scanner is detected.
  • The first two scans made give a bit different results (results still acceptable) than subsequent scans. It is adviced to perform two dummyscans (as 500 DPI) before actually doing real scans.

    Will probably never support:
  • ??

    And finally, the download :-)

    Initial setup
Download the file and unzip in a directory of your choice. All temporary files and scans will be saved as subdirectories, so it is recommended to select a Drive with lots of free diskspace.

    1. On your computer, create a directory for all WDS applications and scans, for example: "d:\WDS"
    2. Download the WDS software from www.wildestdreams.nl
    3. Unzip the download in d:\wds

Before starting a scan, please take some time to read the info from the help pages, it will save you some time, really.

    Requirements
The software is tested using SCSI, although I believe it will work using USB as well.

The software works fine on Windows Xp, and the requirements for scanning under XP are low, I guess any PC running XP will be fine.

The requirements for the Image Processing Application are high, 512 Mbyte is recommended to conveniently work on 2000 DPI scans. Handling 4000 DPI scans can be done, however it is terribly slow at this moment.
